Port of Churchill resumes grain shipments after six-year hiatus

The Port of Churchill is resuming grain shipments for the first time since 2020. Approximately 30,000 tonnes of Canadian durum wheat from Saskatchewan-based AGT Foods are being loaded for transport to Europe.

This milestone follows years of revitalization efforts. The port and the Hudson Bay Railway are owned by OneNorth—a partnership of 29 First Nations and 12 northern communities—and operated by the Arctic Gateway Group. Northern Affairs Minister Rebecca Chartrand described the development as a return of the port as a vital northern gateway connecting the Prairies and the Arctic to global markets.

In addition to wheat, the port is seeing increased diversification this season, with scheduled shipments of zinc concentrate and the first-ever potash shipment. Recent studies suggest that melting sea ice may eventually make year-round shipping feasible without heavy icebreaker use.
