Port of Corpus Christi to study maritime nuclear readiness

The Port of Corpus Christi Authority has entered into agreements to study the implementation of maritime nuclear technology. Through a Memorandum of Collaboration with UK-based developer Core Power, the port will assess its readiness to host floating nuclear power plants to supply electricity to the surrounding region. The study will also evaluate the port’s capacity to serve as a gateway for commercial ships powered by nuclear energy, covering requirements such as grid connections, regulatory approvals, and safe berthing arrangements.

Additionally, the port has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD). This partnership aims to explore the integration of small modular reactor (SMR) technology, resilient port microgrids, and shoreside power architecture. The initiative is intended to bolster maritime supply chain resilience, lower shipping costs, and support workforce development for emerging vessel propulsion concepts.
