Port of Itajaí requests increased tugboat capacity due to strong currents
The administration of the Port of Itajaí has formally requested the Brazilian Navy to increase the number and towing capacity of tugboats operating in the region. This request follows a significant rise in currents within the Itajaí-Açu River, which have reached levels well above safe navigation parameters.
Authorities state that the current support fleet is insufficient to manage vessel maneuvers during high-current scenarios. The intensification of these currents, driven by recent climatic phenomena, has increased the complexity of docking and undocking operations, impacting waiting times and maritime commercial flow.
