Port of Itaqui to auction R$ 147 million fertilizer terminal
The Port of Itaqui in Maranhão is set to auction a new fertilizer terminal, IQI16, on December 9. The project involves an estimated investment of R$ 147.01 million and a 25-year lease agreement with the possibility of extension.
The new terminal aims to requalify approximately 21,800 square meters, providing a static storage capacity of 70,000 tons and an estimated dynamic capacity of 1.008 million tons per year. This expansion comes as the port sees rising demand; in the first quarter of 2026, Itaqui handled 934,000 tons of fertilizers, an 11% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
According to the Ministry of Ports and Airports, the expansion is intended to better serve importers and meet growing demand in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, particularly as the country relies on external sources for approximately 85% of its fertilizer supply.
