Port of Koper authorities intercept illegal textile waste shipment to Tunisia
During the international DEMETER XII operation, Slovenian authorities discovered an illegal shipment of waste textile. The shipment, consisting of two containers, was destined for Tunisia via the Port of Koper.
The operation, organized by the World Customs Organization (WCO), aimed to prevent the illegal transboundary movement of hazardous waste and substances that deplete the ozone layer. Slovenian enforcement agencies, including the Inspectorate for Environment and Space, the Financial Administration, and the police, conducted 12 joint control actions.
In total, authorities inspected 81 transboundary waste shipments, performing 43 physical and 38 documentary checks. These inspections took place at the Port of Koper and various border crossings and highway checkpoints. Beyond the textile seizure, inspectors identified other irregularities, such as improperly marked vehicles and incomplete documentation, leading to various administrative proceedings and warnings.
Globally, the DEMETER XII operation involved 113 customs administrations, reporting 226 total seizures. Among these, plastic waste was the most frequent seizure with 32 instances, followed by electronic waste, metals, rubber, and textiles.
