Port of Koper union faces scrutiny ahead of October 30 protests

Ahead of planned employee protests at the Port of Koper scheduled for October 30, questions have emerged regarding the political affiliations of the Maritime Stevedores Union (SŽPD). Key union representatives, including Mirko Slosar, a member of the SŽPD board and president of the Port of Koper workers' council, are reportedly linked to the political party Levica. Slosar previously played a prominent role in 2016 protests against changes in the company's management.

In addition to political ties, the SŽPD has faced allegations of financial irregularities. Past accusations include the forgery of business documents and abuse of position or trust, matters that have reportedly been under investigation by Koper police and the prosecutor's office. There are also ongoing questions regarding the union's use of membership fees, which total approximately 300,000 euros annually, and the compensation levels for certain union officials.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding potential links between union activities and radical leftist groups, following calls for protest on social media by the anarchist.org platform.
