Port of Long Beach partners with US Maritime Administration to test nuclear ship reactors

The Port of Long Beach has signed a non‑binding agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) to explore the use of small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology for commercial vessels and possibly for shore‑side terminal power. The partnership will involve collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop operational protocols, safety standards and inspection processes for SMR‑powered ships visiting U.S. ports.

Port CEO Noel Hacegaba said the deal allows the port to “leverage federal leadership and private‑sector innovation” to advance nuclear energy in maritime operations, while MARAD Administrator Stephen Carmel noted it supports energy dominance and the resilience of maritime supply chains. The agreement marks the first time a U.S. seaport has formalized a partnership to test nuclear propulsion, a step that could open a pathway for low‑carbon shipping solutions as the industry seeks alternatives to LNG, methanol and battery‑electric power.
