Port of Los Angeles reports record low emissions per container in 2025
The Port of Los Angeles has achieved its lowest emissions per container on record for 2025, according to its latest Inventory of Air Emissions. The report highlights a continuing two-decade trend of environmental progress alongside economic growth.
Since 2005, the Port has reduced diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions by 90%, nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 72%, sulfur oxides (SOx) by 98%, and greenhouse gases (GHGs) by 16%, even as container volumes increased by 37%.
Compared to 2024, 2025 saw a 2% decrease in DPM, a 4% decline in NOx, a 5% drop in SOx, and a 3% reduction in GHGs. The reduction in nitrogen oxides represents the lowest annual total for that pollutant since tracking began in 2005. These results follow the 2017 update to the Clean Air Action Plan, a collaborative effort with the Port of Long Beach to accelerate the transition toward zero-emissions operations.
