Port of Maputo launches $150 million dredging project
The Port of Maputo in Mozambique has commenced a US$150 million capital dredging project designed to accommodate larger vessels. The initiative, managed by the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), aims to allow ships up to 366 metres in length to access the port.
Executed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, the 12-month project will deepen the access channel from 14.4 metres to 15.3 metres and widen both straight sections and bends. The works also include the creation of a new 660-metre diameter turning basin and the removal of over 21 million cubic metres of material. These upgrades are intended to facilitate container vessels with capacities of up to 14,000 TEUs.
MPDC CEO Osório Lucas stated that these investments are linked to the extension of the port concession to 2058. Other planned expansions include the DP World Maputo container terminal and the Matola Coal Terminal.
