Port of Paranaguá monitoring records 149 bird species

The Avifauna Monitoring Program at the Port of Paranaguá recorded 24,941 birds across 149 different species during the first nine months of 2026. This data serves as a biological indicator of the ecological health of the Paraná coast in relation to port activities.

Biologists conduct monthly censuses using both land-based walks and boat-based transects spanning from Pontal do Sul through Ilha do Mel to Antonina. Experts note that bird populations act as environmental sentinels, as they respond more rapidly to ecosystem changes, such as oil spills, than other groups.

Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná, stated that the company aims to balance logistical efficiency with socio-environmental responsibility. He noted that the port has been invited by the UN to participate in COP editions since 2019 and will attend COP31 in Turkey.
