Port of Pasaia fire triggers emergency confinement in Lezo

An industrial fire at the Port of Pasaia, specifically involving piles of metal scrap, plastic, and batteries at the Lezo dock, triggered emergency protocols on Friday morning. The fire, which began around 6:00 AM, produced a dense column of smoke that spread across the bay, affecting Lezo, Rentería, and Donibane.

Authorities issued an ES-Alert, instructing residents in the affected areas to confine themselves indoors, close all doors and windows, and turn off ventilation systems due to the potential toxicity of the smoke. In Lezo, municipal loudspeakers were used to broadcast these warnings.

The incident caused significant disruptions to local mobility. The GI-3440 secondary road was closed, and regular bus services were suspended, temporarily isolating residents of Pasai Donibane. While the fire has been brought under control, emergency services, including firefighters, SOS Deiak, and port tugboats, continue working to extinguish remaining embers and secure the area.
