Port of Ploče denies allegations of toxic waste discharge

The administration of the Port of Ploče, Croatia’s second-largest port, has rejected allegations that thousands of cubic meters of toxic substances were released into the Adriatic Sea during cleaning operations.

The claims originated from reports and video footage published by the Croatian portal Morski.hr, which suggested environmental pollution was occurring. In a statement, port authorities described these reports as “misleading,” asserting that the footage actually depicts routine industrial processes conducted within designated areas using prescribed environmental protection measures.

Authorities stated that water is not discharged directly into the sea but is treated according to environmental standards. They further noted that water quality is continuously monitored by external laboratories and that current data does not confirm any pollution. Similar allegations were made against the port in 2024, which the administration also denied at that time.
