Pozzallo port seizure of 377 exotic animals intercepted

Authorities at the port of Pozzallo, Sicily, have intercepted a massive illegal shipment of 377 exotic animals. The seizure, conducted by the Guardia di Finanza and the Customs and Monopolies Agency, involved 300 freshwater turtles and 77 parrots being transported in a vehicle by a Maltese citizen.

Veterinary inspections confirmed the animals were kept in inadequate conditions, lacking proper space and thermoregulation, causing significant suffering. Notably, 76 of the parrots belong to species protected under the Washington Convention (CITES), including various species of Macaws and Cockatoos. One estimate suggests the illegal sale could have generated approximately 100,000 euros.

The individual responsible has been reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office in Ragusa for crimes including the detention of animals in conditions incompatible with their nature and violations of international trade laws for endangered species. All seized animals have been transferred to a specialized facility to ensure their care.
