Port of Santos closes and ferry services suspended due to dense fog

Dense maritime fog caused significant disruptions to maritime transport and ferry services in the Baixada Santista and Vale do Ribeira regions of Brazil between Monday night (17) and Tuesday morning (18).

Due to visibility dropping below 500 meters, the Capitania dos Portos ordered the closure of the Port of Santos to ship entries and exits at 6:45 AM as a safety precaution. Various ferry crossings were also temporarily suspended, including the Bertioga–Guarujá route, the Vicente de Carvalho–Santos connection, and several crossings in the Vale do Ribeira such as Cananéia–Ilha Comprida and Cananéia–Continente.

The State Secretariat for Environment, Infrastructure, and Logistics (Semil) stated that these closures followed strict nautical safety protocols to protect passengers and crews. Operations began returning to normal around 8:45 AM as the fog dissipated with morning warming.
