Port of Santos faces expansion debates and US tariff impacts

The Port of Santos is facing both infrastructure development discussions and economic challenges due to international trade barriers. During the 5th Port and Industry Connection Forum, authorities and private sector representatives discussed the expansion of the port's capacity. Key topics included the National Logistics Plan 2050, which aims to integrate ports with road, rail, and waterway networks. Strategic projects mentioned by the Santos Port Authority (APS) include interventions on the right bank and deepening the navigation channel, though challenges regarding land availability and lease contracts remain.

Simultaneously, trade data from Amcham Brasil indicates that US tariffs have caused a 9.7% decline in exports from the state of São Paulo to the United States throughout 2026. The most significant drop occurred in July, with a 23.2% decrease. While surcharged items saw a 31.5% decline, even exempt goods like aircraft and orange juice experienced an 11.6% reduction. Despite these headwinds, sectors such as light oils and transformers showed significant growth. Amcham Brasil warns that bilateral trade dynamism may continue to weaken as long as the current tariff scenario persists.
