Port of Santos faces long-term efficiency and infrastructure challenges

The Port of Santos, Latin America’s largest port complex, faces significant long-term infrastructure and efficiency challenges. According to the Santos 10+ study, even with planned infrastructure works, the port may continue to encounter efficiency bottlenecks, particularly regarding highway connectivity, through 2035.

Ricardo Molitzas, executive director of the Sindicato dos Operadores Portuários do Estado de São Paulo (SOPESP), emphasized the need for long-term state planning that remains consistent across different government administrations. Key obstacles identified include dredging requirements and the necessity for continuous investment to manage growing cargo volumes.

In a related development, the city of Santos will host the II National Port Congress on August 20-21. Organized by the Academia Brasileira de Formação e Pesquisa (ABFP), the event will bring together authorities, regulators, and investors to discuss modernization, legal security, sustainability, and digital transformation within the Brazilian port system.
