Port of Savannah Ocean Terminal renovation exceeds 60% completion

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has announced that renovations at the Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal are more than 60% complete. The US$1.6 billion project aims to increase the terminal’s annual container capacity from 200,000 TEUs to 1.75 million TEUs.

A key milestone has been reached with the completion of a 2,650-foot berth, which is now ready to accommodate larger vessels. While the terminal will continue to handle smaller ships for the time being, the first phase of the renovated container yard is expected to be operational by mid-autumn 2027, with full yard completion scheduled for the end of 2028.

Infrastructure improvements also include a fully operational truck gate featuring 12 inbound and six outbound lanes. Additionally, a US$29 million overpass has been completed to direct departing port traffic toward U.S. 17 and Interstate 16, successfully rerouting heavy vehicles away from local neighborhood streets.

This redevelopment is part of a broader ten-year strategy by the GPA to invest US$5 billion in capacity improvements, which includes plans for five additional container berths in Savannah and a new RoRo berth in Brunswick.
