Port of Savannah secures approval for $2.3B terminal expansion

The Georgia Ports Authority has secured federal approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a $2.3 billion (approximately €2.1 billion) container terminal project at the Port of Savannah. The project, located on Hutchinson Island, is expected to add 3.5 million TEU of annual capacity, raising the port’s total capacity from 7.75 million TEU to 12 million TEU.

Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2028. This expansion is part of a broader infrastructure investment program, which includes a $1.6 billion upgrade to the Ocean Terminal intended for completion by the end of 2028. Georgia Ports Authority President Kevin Price noted that the new terminal is central to the port’s goal of becoming a 12 million TEU gateway container port to support regional and national growth.
