Port of Shanghai hits record monthly container throughput

The Port of Shanghai achieved a historic monthly record in September 2026, handling 5.135 million TEUs. This represents a 6.2% increase compared to September 2025, despite the port facing operational disruptions from three consecutive typhoons that caused vessel congestion and temporary work stoppages.

Following the weather disturbances, port facilities increased loading and unloading rates to clear backlogs. Notably, the Mingdong terminal set a new operational record by handling 30,056 TEUs within a single 24-hour period.

Year-to-date figures from January to September 2026 show a total throughput of approximately 42.83 million TEUs, a 3.1% rise over the 41.54 million TEUs recorded during the same period last year. If current growth trends continue, the port is projected to reach an annual volume of approximately 56.8 million TEUs by the end of the year, approaching the 57 million TEU mark.
