Port of Sines East Breakwater extension deemed environmentally viable

An environmental impact study has deemed the proposed 400-meter extension of the East Breakwater at the Port of Sines environmentally viable and justified, provided specific mitigation measures are implemented.

The project, promoted by the APS (Administration of the Ports of Sines and the Algarve), aims to extend the current structure using concrete blocks. Technical-economic analysis indicated that a 400-meter extension offers the most balanced solution between technical efficacy and economic rationality, noting that shorter extensions would be insufficient for operational shelter while longer extensions would yield marginal gains.

If completed, the extension is expected to significantly reduce operational downtime caused by sea agitation. Studies suggest a reduction in inoperability of approximately 67% in the Service Port and Multipurpose Terminal, and up to 50% in the Liquefied Natural Gas and Petrochemical Terminals.
