Port of Sines military use questioned by Bloco de Esquerda

The Bloco de Esquerda (BE) political party has formally questioned the Portuguese government regarding the potential military use of the new General Cargo Quay at the Port of Sines. In a request directed to the Ministry of National Defense, BE deputy Fabian Figueiredo sought clarification on the terms, scale, and timeline for such use.

The party is investigating whether this infrastructure is intended to serve as a central hub within a broader NATO logistics network. Furthermore, BE has called for the disclosure of impact studies concerning civil security, industrial risk, and territorial planning. The party expressed concerns that the lack of public consultation and transparency regarding the project's military component constitutes a democratic deficit and could turn the Sines region into a strategic target in international conflicts.
