Port of Sines new quay urged to prioritize offshore wind industry
The environmental association ZERO is advocating for the new General Cargo Quay at the Port of Sines to prioritize the energy transition and the development of an offshore wind industrial chain in Portugal.
The project, promoted by the Administration of the Ports of Sines and the Algarve (APS), involves an investment exceeding 90 million euros. While the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) recognizes the infrastructure's potential for offshore renewables, ZERO warns that the terminal's future use remains insufficiently defined. The current study allows for a variety of uses, including agro-food bulk, RO-RO vehicle operations, and dual civil and military applications.
ZERO argues that the quay's specific characteristics—such as high load capacity, large platform areas, and railway connections—make it ideal for high-value activities. These include the assembly, integration, maintenance, repair, and specialized logistics of offshore wind components. The association emphasizes that a clear focus is necessary to ensure Portugal develops domestic industrial and technological capacity rather than merely serving as a transit point for foreign-produced equipment.
