Italian Adriatic ports implement new safety and technology initiatives
Italian port authorities and regional institutions are implementing new safety and modernization initiatives across the Adriatic coast. In the Northern Adriatic, the Port Authority of the Northern Adriatic Sea has established a Permanent Table for the ports of Venice and Chioggia to improve safety, identify critical issues, and enhance competitiveness through constant dialogue between operators.
In Porto Marghera, an emergency drill is scheduled for September 29, 2026, at the Versalis Spa plant. Coordinated by the Prefecture of Venice, the exercise will simulate a fire incident to test the effectiveness of external emergency plans involving firefighters, police, and regional health services.
In Trieste, a collaborative program between INAIL, the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority, and ASUGI has concluded its testing of “Safety 4.0” technologies. These include occupational exoskeletons to reduce physical strain, modular laser barriers, advanced vision systems, and simulators for training in confined spaces. The project also focused on monitoring “near miss” events to improve prevention policies.
Meanwhile, in the Central Adriatic, Mirco Carloni of the Central Adriatic Sea Port Authority highlighted significant investments in the ports of Pescara, Ortona, and Vasto. These funds aim to modernize docks, increase depth for better navigability, and support growing industrial sectors such as wind turbine production.
