Port of Valencia north expansion faces delays, first phase unlikely to meet 2026 deadline
Satellite images from mid‑July show that the area behind the future quay of the Port of Valencia's north expansion remains flooded, indicating that the required land‑fill and consolidation work is still unfinished. Experts consulted say the water‑filled strip between the dock boxes and the fill must be completely removed, filled, and pre‑loaded before the ground can support the terminal's permanent structures. The project, the largest port work currently under way in Spain, is valued at over €590 million and is being carried out by Terminal Investment Limited, the port subsidiary of MSC. The contract set a milestone for the end of 2026 to deliver about one kilometre of quay and a fully consolidated apron, but the present state of the site suggests that this target is no longer realistic.
The delay threatens the schedule for installing key components such as the cantilever beam and concrete mooring structures, which cannot be placed until the ground stabilises. If the fill and consolidation are not completed promptly, subsequent phases of the terminal's development will also be pushed back.
