Port of Vigo sees container traffic growth at Guixar terminal

The Port of Vigo has seen a significant increase in container traffic, reaching 183,955 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) between January and July. This represents a 0.8% year-on-year increase, slightly trailing the overall Spanish average of 1.2%.

At the Guixar terminal, the volume of movement is equivalent to loading and unloading approximately 6,130 containers daily. This is a substantial rise compared to seven years ago, when weekly traffic at Guixar did not reach 3,500 units. This growth is attributed to high industrial workload, internal demand, and a sharp rise in fruit traffic.

Despite the growth, the Guixar concessionaire, Termavide, faces challenges regarding space for empty containers, which are essential for the logistics cycle. To manage congestion, the terminal has partially utilized the Rande berth for cleaning and repairs. Future plans include expanding the fruit cold storage facility and incorporating the former Tudela Veguín silos to alleviate space constraints.
