Port of Yokohama implements shore power to reduce emissions
The Port of Yokohama is upgrading its infrastructure to reduce environmental impact through the implementation of Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems. This technology allows docked vessels to shut down their auxiliary diesel generators and instead draw electricity directly from the shore.
As part of a broader strategy to establish a ‘Carbon Neutral Port’, Yokohama developed infrastructure specifically for cargo ships at the Honmoku A4 pier during the 2024 fiscal year. This initiative addresses the continuous emissions produced by ships while moored, as vessels typically require electricity for lighting, communication, navigation, ventilation, and refrigeration systems.
By transitioning from fossil fuel-powered onboard generators to land-based electricity, the port aims to progressively reduce the emissions associated with its maritime operations.
