Port operators advance electrification in Jeddah and Rotterdam
Global port operators are advancing electrification efforts to reduce carbon emissions in major logistics hubs.
At Jeddah Islamic Port’s South Container Terminal, DP World has deployed 35 Electric Terminal Tractors (ETTs). This expansion of the terminal’s tractor fleet by over 20% is part of an $800 million investment program to modernize infrastructure. The move aims to reduce annual CO2 emissions from the terminal tractor fleet by approximately 20% and supports a long-term goal of 100% electrification of terminal equipment at the site by 2030.
In the Port of Rotterdam, DM Transport has introduced its first heavy-duty battery-electric truck, a Volvo FH Electric, to support container-shunting operations at QTerminals Kramer Rotterdam. This deployment follows a previous year-long initiative using HVO100 biofuel. The transition to electric heavy transport is intended to provide practical experience with battery-electric performance, charging, and scheduling in demanding port environments.
