Port security updates: New scanners in Argentina and equipment shortages in Spain

Puerto Quequén in Argentina has introduced two new fixed X-ray scanners to enhance security at its main entry points. The technology is designed to inspect bags and packages to improve monitoring precision and streamline daily procedures. As part of this implementation, 31 personnel received specialized training in radiological safety, operational regulations, and image interpretation, conducted in collaboration with the Prefectura Naval Argentina.

In contrast, Spain’s primary port has been operating without a critical inspection scanner for six months. The device, used to detect drugs, weapons, and illicit goods in containers without opening them, was rendered permanently inoperable in February following damage from storm Leonardo. While authorities continue to use alternative inspection methods, the absence of this non-invasive technology impacts the speed and operational capacity of customs controls at this major commercial gateway.
