Port Washington Little League credits phone ban for success

The Port Washington Little League team from Long Island, New York, attributes much of its historic season to a self-imposed ban on cell phone use during game days. The team, which recently won its first-ever New York State title in its 63-year history, is currently two wins away from qualifying for the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Under the policy, players place their mobile devices in a bucket five hours before the start of play to minimize distractions and increase focus. Assistant coach Anthony Theoharis described the practice as an ‘on button’ that helps the players get ‘locked in.’ Players have embraced the rule, with third baseman Jack Gomez calling the practice a ‘good luck charm’ that prevents overstimulation and keeps them focused on the game.

The team is currently competing in the regional round, facing elimination games against teams from Connecticut and New Jersey to secure a berth in the World Series.
