Porter Airlines flight cancelled in Canada after child refuses seat belt
A Porter Airlines flight from Victoria to Toronto was cancelled on August 6 after a young child refused to sit down and fasten their seat belt. The aircraft had already begun taxiing toward the runway when the crew realized the child was standing on their seat and would not comply with safety protocols.
Despite repeated attempts by the cabin crew and the accompanying parent to secure the child, the situation remained unresolved. For safety reasons, the crew elected to return to the terminal to disembark the child and their parent, along with their luggage. The resulting delays, including the time needed to refile flight plans and handle administrative paperwork, caused the aircraft to miss the airport's midnight runway closure deadline.
As a result, the flight was cancelled, and the remaining passengers were rebooked for the following day. The incident has sparked a public debate regarding airline safety procedures and parental responsibility. Aviation safety expert Lia Tuso noted that the crew's decision was necessary, stating that “unrestrained children can become projectiles” during turbulence, takeoff, or landing. Some passengers reported that the child appeared to be acting out of fear rather than being intentionally disruptive.
