Portfolio diet approach targets cholesterol reduction

The portfolio diet is a nutritional approach designed to reduce LDL cholesterol levels with efficacy comparable to statins. Developed by Dr. David Jenkins, a professor at the University of Toronto, the method functions similarly to a financial portfolio by diversifying food groups to mitigate health risks rather than relying on a single superfood.

The strategy focuses on the consistent addition of four key food groups to meals: viscous soluble fibers (such as oats, barley, eggplant, and citrus), plant proteins (including soy, lentils, chickpeas, and beans), nuts and seeds, and plant sterols. This dietary framework is intended to be flexible and adaptable to new scientific findings.
