Portfolio diet may reduce LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular risk

Dietary changes can serve as a significant strategy for managing cholesterol levels alongside medical treatments. The ‘Portfolio’ diet, developed by Canadian researchers in 2002, focuses on four key food groups known to reduce cholesterol: fiber, unsaturated fats, nuts, and vegetables.

Research indicates that the Portfolio diet may reduce LDL cholesterol by approximately 35% within one month under certain conditions. Furthermore, a long-term study by Harvard researchers tracking nearly 210,000 healthcare professionals in the United States over 30 years found that individuals following this diet had a 14% lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those who followed it least.

Dr. David Jenkins notes that while high cholesterol is increasingly common, not every individual requires the same level of LDL reduction, emphasizing that dietary shifts are an important tool for many.
