Portici supporter fighting for life after football match assault
Mario Spedaliere, a 34-year-old Portici supporter, is in critical condition following a violent assault after the Puteolana-Portici football match on October 25. He is currently receiving neurosurgical care at the Santa Maria delle Grazie hospital in Pozzuoli after sustaining a severe traumatic brain injury.
Authorities have arrested eight individuals, including five adults and three minors, in connection with the incident. A 19-year-old suspect admitted to striking the victim with a wooden club but has been placed under house arrest due to a medical condition incompatible with detention. The suspect claimed the attack was a reaction to the victim allegedly pointing a knife at him, though investigators noted there is currently no evidence to support the claim that the victim was armed.
The victim's father, Massimo Spedaliere, has contested the version of events provided by the 19-year-old, stating that video footage shows his son was swarmed by five or six people. He also raised concerns regarding stadium security and the timing of fan exits. While medical reports from October 27 indicated a slight improvement, the victim's prognosis remains guarded.
