Portland Canal Marine Terminal opens as majority Indigenous-owned port

The Portland Canal Marine Terminal has officially opened in Stewart, British Columbia, marking the province’s first majority Indigenous-owned port. The facility is equally owned and governed by the Nisg̱a’a Nation, the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation, and Arrow Transportation Systems Inc.

Serving the Northwest mining sector, the deep-sea terminal is located near the Golden Triangle mineral district. It currently processes approximately 300,000 tonnes of copper and gold concentrate annually. As Canada’s most northerly ice-free deep-sea port, it provides year-round, all-weather operations and offers direct highway access to Northwest B.C. and the Yukon.

The partnership acquired the former Stewart Bulk Terminal in fall 2025, supported by a $5-million provincial grant. Plans are underway to modernize and expand the port to increase outbound mineral shipments and develop capacity for inbound cargo. This expansion work is supported by $672,134 in federal funding through PacifiCan.
