Portland police shoot and kill suspect after carjacking pursuit
Portland police shot and killed 37-year-old Jacob Hastings on Thursday night following a series of violent incidents in downtown Portland, Maine. The sequence began when Hastings allegedly threatened employees at Nova Seafood with a firearm before fleeing in a stolen pickup truck.
Authorities reported receiving multiple subsequent calls regarding vehicle crashes and additional carjackings occurring at gunpoint. Following a vehicle pursuit, Hastings crashed into the Casco Bay Lines property on Commercial Street and fled on foot. Police stated that during the foot pursuit, Hastings failed to follow commands and reached toward his waistband, appearing to present his hands as if holding a firearm toward officers. He was subsequently shot and killed.
Officers Anthony George, Jordin Jackson, and Greg Ishihara have been placed on administrative leave. The Maine Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Investigators later recovered a firearm in one of the stolen vehicles involved in the incident.
