Portland Winterhawks appoint Brett Hopwo as Director of Player Personnel

Brett Hopwo, a former scout and long‑time associate of the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks, has been promoted to Director of Player Personnel, effective July 28, 2026. Hopwo joined the Winterhawks as a scout in 2013, later serving as head scout for British Columbia for the 2024‑25 season, and has also worked as an assistant coach in the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy program.

A retired mortgage specialist, Hopwo played junior hockey with the Kerry Park Islanders of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League, tallying 114 goals, 116 assists and 796 career penalty minutes (260 incurred in the 1989‑90 season). He was later an assistant coach with the Cowichan Valley Capitals (1996‑98). Kelly Shields, Director of the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy, said the promotion “is incredibly well deserved and a reflection of the respect he has earned throughout the hockey community.”
