Porto Acre establishes permanent forum for ethnic‑racial education

The municipal government of Porto Acre, Acre, Brazil, created the Forum Permanente de Educação Étnico‑Racial (FPEER) on 31 May 2024. The forum was instituted by Decree 403 signed by Mayor Máximo Antônio de Souza Costa and will operate for a three‑year term, renewable once, without remuneration.

FPEER’s mandate is to monitor, propose and enforce public policies that implement Federal Laws 10.639/2003 and 11.645/2008, which require the teaching of Afro‑Brazilian, African and Indigenous histories and cultures in schools. Its membership includes representatives from the municipal education secretariat, the state education nucleus, municipal education councils, child‑rights council, teachers’ unions, the culture department and the city council. The body will also coordinate with the National Policy for Equity, Education for Ethnic‑Racial Relations and Quilombola School Education (PNEERQ).
