Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro set AI governance rules for municipal services
The city council of Porto Alegre approved a law establishing a municipal Data Governance Committee to monitor, regulate and audit the use of artificial‑intelligence systems in all city agencies. The committee will set guidelines, issue mandatory technical opinions and require periodic reports on the impact of automated decisions, aiming to prevent unregulated software deployments and strengthen cybersecurity.
On Brazil's National Personal Data Protection Day, Rio de Janeiro's municipal Secretariat of Integrity and Transparency released an "Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence" guide for public servants. The guide outlines best‑practice principles, risk‑mitigation measures and compliance with data‑protection legislation. "Artificial intelligence offers important opportunities for public service, but it must be used responsibly, transparently and with respect for citizens' rights," said Rodrigo Corrêa, the city's secretary of Integrity and Transparency.
