Porto Alegre enacts AI governance law and teacher training program

Porto Alegre Mayor Sebastião Melo has signed Law No. 14.644/2026, establishing rules for the ethical use and governance of artificial intelligence within the city's public administration. The legislation mandates that high-risk automated decisions affecting citizens must include human supervision and undergo an Algorithmic Impact Assessment (AIA) to prevent discrimination. Additionally, content generated by AI must be clearly identified, and the city will prioritize responsive AI solutions in controlled environments.

In a separate development, the city has approved the Municipal Program for Continuing Education Scholarships (PROFORCE). Managed by the Municipal Education Secretariat, the program provides financial support for public school teachers pursuing various academic levels, including undergraduate degrees, specializations, master's, and doctoral programs. To receive funding, educators must participate in a public selection process and commit to applying their acquired knowledge within the municipal school system.
