Porto Alegre hosts march and meeting against religious intolerance
Porto Alegre is hosting the 3rd March of the Quimbandeiros and the 19th International Meeting of Quimbandeiros to protest religious intolerance against African-matrix traditions. Led by Pai Ricardo de Oxum, president of the Sociedade Beneficente Cultural Oxum e Oxalá, the events aim to establish the city as a reference for practitioners in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile.
According to organizers, the movement was born nearly two decades ago to combat prejudice and the repression of religious manifestations in Rio Grande do Sul. Despite having the highest percentage of Umbanda and Candomblé followers in Brazil at 3.19%, according to 2022 IBGE census data, the state also faces significant levels of religious intolerance.
Participants noted that similar challenges exist in neighboring countries. In Argentina, practitioners report instances where police intervene in religious activities following neighbor complaints, while similar struggles with visibility and acceptance have been noted in Uruguay and Chile.
