Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology issues new visual health guidelines
The Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO) has released new guidelines during its 70th Congress in Salvador to emphasize the importance of regular eye examinations. The document outlines recommended consultation frequencies based on age and health status to prevent irreversible vision loss. Key recommendations include the red reflex test for newborns within 72 hours of life, a complete ophthalmological exam between 6 and 12 months, and annual check-ups starting at age 40 to monitor conditions like glaucoma and presbyopia. Individuals with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, are advised to undergo more frequent monitoring due to the high risk of diabetic retinopathy.
In conjunction with these guidelines, various regional health initiatives are addressing visual health needs in Brazil. In Salvador, the 'Pequenos Olhares' project provided free eye care and potential eyewear to approximately 1,000 children and adolescents. In Penedo, the 'Sua Vida Com Um Novo Olhar' program has distributed glasses to over 5,000 beneficiaries to improve quality of life and academic performance. Additionally, Caxias do Sul has expanded its online scheduling system to streamline the collection of medications and nutritional diets through its Specialized Pharmacy.
