Porto Alegre man charged with homophobic attacks against building manager
The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS) has filed charges against a man in Porto Alegre for homophobic attacks against a building manager in the city's Historic Center. The charges include physical assault, hateful insult, and incitement to discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The incidents reportedly began in June following a dispute over condominium rules. The victim, a professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), was subjected to physical and verbal violence witnessed by neighbors. Over the following three months, the aggressor allegedly engaged in repeated intimidation, threats, and stalking, including cornering the victim in a common area.
The defendant has been in preventive detention since September 9. The court cited the risk of escalating conduct and the defendant's criminal history—which includes a 15-year sentence for attempted robbery and drug trafficking—as grounds for detention. The prosecutor has also requested a minimum amount for damages to be paid to the victim.
