Porto Alegre proposes food security council changes and 2027 budget guidelines

The municipal government of Porto Alegre has introduced two significant legislative proposals. First, a bill has been submitted to restructure the Municipal Council for Sustainable Food and Nutritional Security. The proposal seeks to reduce the council's membership from 36 to 24 members to optimize decision-making. The new structure will maintain a ratio of eight public sector representatives to 16 civil society members. Additionally, the Municipal Food and Nutritional Security Coordination will move from the Mayor's Office to the Municipal Secretariat for Inclusion and Human Development.

Separately, Mayor Sebastião Melo has submitted the 2027 Budgetary Guidelines Law (LDO) to the City Council. Developed by the Municipal Secretariat of Planning and Management, the proposal sets the framework for the 2027 Annual Budget Law and aligns with the 2026-2029 Multi-Year Plan. The LDO 2027 projects balanced revenues and expenditures totaling R$ 14.16 billion, focusing on fiscal stability, tax legislation updates, and ongoing public works.
