Porto Alegre public hospitals face critical occupancy levels

Public emergency services in Porto Alegre, Brazil, are experiencing severe overcrowding, with occupancy rates in urgent care units (UPAs) exceeding 180%. Public hospitals are also operating well above capacity; the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) reported an occupancy rate of 291%, while Santa Casa de Misericórdia reached 225% and Hospital Conceição stood at 165%.

At the UPAs, the Moacyr Scliar unit recorded 259% occupancy, with one-third of patients originating from outside the city. Other high-occupancy locations include the Bom Jesus unit at 254% and Lomba do Pinheiro at 188%.

Data from the Municipal Health Secretariat indicates that 4,359 beds are currently occupied, representing 99% of the 4,423 operational beds in the city. While private hospitals, such as Mãe de Deus, report significantly lower occupancy rates, health professionals note that the surge in public demand is driven by a combination of various factors rather than a single cause.
