Porto Alegre to implement private security at Borges de Medeiros Viaduct

The Borges de Medeiros Viaduct in the Historic Center of Porto Alegre will implement 24-hour private security services starting August 27. The measure aims to increase safety following increased pedestrian activity driven by new commercial openings along the structure.

A third-party company will provide the service, deploying two unarmed guards during the day and four at night. The security team will operate from a room provided by the Confia no Centro consortium. Currently, the area is patrolled by the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM).

Cezar Schirmer, Secretary of Municipal Planning and Management, stated the goal is to transform the viaduct into a tourist attraction and a space for social interaction. This follows a structural and aesthetic restoration completed in April, which cost R$ 18.7 million and included electrical, plumbing, and waterproofing improvements, as well as the restoration of original architectural elements.
