Porto celebrates 25 years of European Capital of Culture legacy

Porto is celebrating its cultural heritage through a series of open-air events at Avenida dos Aliados. This year’s programming holds special significance as it marks the 25th anniversary of Porto serving as the European Capital of Culture in 2001, as well as the 30th anniversary of Porto’s Historic Center being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The festivities include a large-scale musical program, beginning with the Orquestra Som da Rua and approximately 200 amateur voices. A major highlight is a concert by the Porto Symphony Orchestra of Casa da Música, directed by maestro Diogo Costa, featuring operatic works such as ‘The Barber of Seville’, ‘Werther’, and ‘Carmen’ with soloists Héloïse Poulet, Lotte Verstaen, and Timothée Varon.

City officials, including Culture Councilor Jorge Sobrado, noted that the Porto 2001 initiative was a transformative milestone that fundamentally reshaped the city’s artistic ecosystem and cultural offerings.
