Porto Cervo's evolution from medieval port to luxury yacht hub and host of Rolex Swan Cup 2026

Porto Cervo on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda traces its origins to at least 1173, when medieval documents recorded the safe anchorage known as “Loco Demola.” Historic maps such as the 1290 Carta Pisana show the bay as a key Mediterranean trading point.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV and international investors transformed the modest fishing village into a premier luxury destination, creating the Costa Smeralda resort and a world‑renowned marina that now hosts super‑yachts, international regattas and high‑end tourism. An exhibition titled “Fra Bussole e Stelle. Porto Cervo nell’antica cartografia” displays the ancient charts and documents that underline the town’s maritime legacy.

The biennial Rolex Swan Cup returns to Porto Cervo in 2026, billed as the largest edition yet. Sponsored by Rolex and featuring Nautor’s Swan yachts, the event gathers elite owners, entrepreneurs and aristocrats from many nations, emphasizing sailing as a refined, philosophical pursuit rather than a conventional sport.
