Porto Cesareo hit by severe downburst causing rescues and damage

A severe weather event, identified as a downburst, struck the coast of Porto Cesareo, causing significant disruption and requiring emergency rescues. The phenomenon, characterized by a heavy mass of cold air descending from a thunderstorm, produced powerful horizontal wind gusts rather than a rotating tornado.

The Coast Guard coordinated multiple rescue operations involving four naval units and 20 personnel. They assisted approximately 20 recreational boaters who were unable to return to their moorings due to the storm. Additionally, 20 swimmers were rescued from an islet near the Sant’Isidoro beach; 12 were brought to shore by local lifeguards, while the remaining eight, including three minors, were recovered by the Coast Guard and taken to the Port Authority in Gallipoli.

The downburst caused physical damage to the local area, including the destruction of decorative lighting and flooding of beach establishments. Sand and water were displaced by the wind, damaging umbrellas, cabins, and coastal infrastructure, which may impact the local summer tourism economy.
