Porto Cocciani begins seabed leveling to support Olbia port traffic

Extraordinary seabed leveling operations have commenced at Porto Cocciani in Olbia. The intervention, ordered by the Port System Authority of the Sea of Sardinia, aims to maintain the efficiency and safety of the industrial port during the peak summer traffic period.

The works target two areas in front of the North quay, where increased vessel movement has caused sand accumulation. The goal is to restore the seabed to its original depth of 8 meters to ensure adequate safety margins for navigation and port activities. This maintenance is critical as the industrial port is currently being used to rotate medium-sized ferries, helping to alleviate pressure on the Isola Bianca docks.

To navigate the confined spaces of the affected areas, the authority is utilizing the pontoon ‘Fortunato’, a smaller vessel than the crane ship used for previous access channel maintenance in May. Starting in early September, the equipment will also be used for seabed characterization surveys to prepare for future dredging of the access channel and Isola Bianca quays.
