Porto Conte Park governance sparks debate in Alghero
Debate is intensifying in Alghero regarding the governance reform of regional protected areas in Sardinia, specifically concerning the Porto Conte Regional Natural Park. The Punta Giglio Libera association has criticized the current political discourse, arguing that discussions are focused on power balances and municipal influence rather than scientific expertise. They noted that Porto Conte remains the only regional protected area lacking a definitive management plan, a situation they described as a “vulnerabilty in the Sardinian landscape.”
In a separate appeal, Stefano Campus has advocated for the exclusive management of the park by the City of Alghero. He argues that because the entire protected territory falls under the municipality's jurisdiction and contains vital economic resources like the Neptune and Green Caves, the 1999 decision to align the park's assembly with the Alghero City Council should be maintained. Campus proposed a model of cooperation involving the Sardinia Region, the University of Sassari, and the Forestas agency to balance local autonomy with institutional synergy.
